Train lines between Bolton and Preston have been damaged leading to some services between preston and Manchester to be cancelled.
This is also affecting trains between Blackpol North, Poulton and Manchester too.
Repair work will only begin at 9.30am, following morning rush hour, to prevent further disruption to Northern Rail services elsewhere on the line.
Throughout this emergency work – the line will be closed in both directions.
Rail Replacement busses are baing arranged to cover until 2pm when the issue is due to be resolved.
Northern rail are advising passengers to check with their online service before planning a journey using a train today.
