Fire crews rush to former hotel fire

6 Fire Appliances and crews were on scene at the site of the fire on King Edward Avenue at around 17:15 – 1900 this evening.

3 police units including 2 vans and a tac ops car were also on scene for support. The NHS sent a small incident response vehicle too.

There was a smell of smoke in the air and it could be seen billowing from a first floor window as we arrived at the side of the affected building.

Now a construction site – the premises used to be the Hackett’s York House hotel but has been boarded up for construction for some time.

We left the scene at around 1845 as a 6th fire engine arrived on scene but crews were withdrawing from the building at this point and mustering their kit ready for the next job.
